History
The Department of Uveitis & Ocular Immunology at the Tianjin Medical University Eye Hospital was officially founded in 2011. The founder is Prof Zhang Xiaomin, head of the department.
Faculty experts and team
Prof Zhang Xiaomin (MD, PhD) is a senior consultant and doctoral supervisor. She is the director of Uveitis & Ocular Immunology Department and deputy director of Tianjin Medical University Eye Institute. Prof Zhang joined in Tianjin Medical University Eye Hospital (TMUEH) after she graduated from Tianjin Medical University and received her PhD in 2004. With the scholarship from FONDATION FRANCO-CHINOISE POUR LA SCIENCE ET SES APPLICATIONS (FFCSA), she did one year of postdoctoral work from 2005 to 2006 at Rothschild Hospital and University Paris 12 in Paris. She has been awarded the title of talent in the new century of Tianjin Medical University, leading talent of Tianjin universities and outstanding contribution expert of Tianjin. At present, she is the member of several ophthalmology related societies and editor of two major ophthalmological journals in China.
Clinical work and scientific research
The Department of Uveitis & Ocular Immunology at the Tianjin Medical University Eye Hospital provides diagnosis and management of a wide range of uveitic and ocular immune disorders. Over the past decade, the department has provided high quality of professional medical service for patients with ocular immune diseases from all over the country and gained high praise and reputation. The department has established a standardized diagnosis and treatment process and disease file management system for patients. For each patient, individual disease documents, as well as personalized treatment plans will be established. Individual optimization and combination therapy are emphasized in the treatment plan, such as combination therapy of hormone, immunosuppressive agents and biological agents and combination therapy of drugs and surgery. New technologies, such as intravitreous implantation of sustained release implant of corticosteroids and intraocular fluid examination, have been introduced in the diagnosis and treatments for ocular immune diseases. The department has gained rich experience in tackling with complications such as cataract, glaucoma and retinal detachment due to uveitis.
Besides clinical services, the department also carries out basic and clinical research work aiming to explore the pathogenesis and genetics of uveitis and develop new therapies for refractory uveitis. The research work on mesenchymal stem cell therapy for uveitis is at the forefront of the research in this field. The department has undertaken seven grants from National Natural Science Foundation of China and many other grants, and has made significant contributions to the ophthalmic literature. |
